Much of the project's time and energy was directed at the basement, a dark and heavy space that the clients didn't enjoy spending time in. ‘The basement houses the kitchen, which you always end up gravitating towards as a family so we knew we needed to give it a lot of attention.’ In its current state, the cabinets were painted in – you guessed it – charcoal, and the floor was a large format dark slate, which only added to the oppressive feel of the space. However, the kitchen cabinetry was of good quality. ‘It wasn't old, it wasn't falling apart, so we decided to just lift what was already there, making it feel fresher and more welcoming. We changed to worktops from a grey composite to a combination or iroko and quartzite, and added the tiled splash back. We then closed the open shelves in the island to make it more practical for a busy household.’

The slate floors were a slightly trickier problem to tackle and the team toyed with the idea of replacing them. However, in an effort to conserve budget, they decided to simply spruce them up with a lick of commercial grade paint. ‘We chose a vibrant cherry red for something warm but contrasting,' explains Alice. 'We had embraced yellow tones here, so knew the boldness of the red would offset the palette without being overly dominant and it was definitely the right choice not to play it safe.’ Once painted, they layered rugs over the top to break up any large swatches of red.

In total, the project took around a year and a half to complete. ‘We were lucky that the clients were super involved. Every item was signed off by them and the process was really efficient because of our smooth running relationship.’ When Golden look back at the paragraph they created at the beginning, does the finished house fit the brief? ‘We wrote down that the client wanted something sophisticated yet down to earth, colourful but calm,’ notes Alice. We think it hits all of those marks.
